Hollyhock Model Sheet

Hollyhock Manheim-Mannheim-Guerrero-Robinson-Zilberschlag-Hsung-Fonzerelli-McQuack, after making a brief appearance in the season three finale, was introduced as a new major character in the fourth season of BoJack Horsemanand became a reccurring character in the following seasons.

She initially believes she is BoJack Horseman's daughter, and after a DNA test confirms the two are related, she stays with BoJack as she tries to find out who her mother is. It is eventually revealed that she is actually BoJack's half-sister, sired by BoJack's father, Butterscotch, with his mistress, Henrietta.

According to her birth certificate, as shown in What Time Is It Right Now, she was originally named "Girl Horse," before being adopted and raised by eight gay fathers.

In Season 5, she begins attending college at Wesleyan University in Connecticut.

In Season 6, BoJack becomes the acting professor at Wesleyan. Initially, Hollyhock supports it, but after learning about the incident with Maddy in Tesuque she starts to distance herself from him, and after seeing BoJack's interview with Biscuits Braxby she decides to end all ties with him months later in The Horny Unicorn.

Physical Appearance

Hollyhock is a female chestnut horse. She has chestnut fur with a darker chestnut brown mane with bangs that are worn parted, a white diamond-shaped mark on her forehead, lighter brown fur on her mouth and nostrils, and lighter brown freckles on her cheeks, neck, chest, legs, and upper arms.

According to the model sheets, she is around 5 '8 and has a chubby/heavyset build.

Hollyhock wears a teal long-sleeved shirt with a dark teal collar and sleeve cuffs, dark grey ripped jeans with holes at the knees and pale yellow sneakers with pink socks. She also has two piercings on her right ear, and she also wears a double-stranded beaded necklace with a simple gold feather-shaped pendant. She sometimes wears a purple jacket with brown fur lining on the hood, especially during cold weather.

According to Hollyhock, people always say she looks a lot like BoJack, which is why she initially thought he was her father.

In the later part of Season 4 Hollyhock slowly loses weight from episode to episode by unknowingly drinking drugged coffee by Beatrice Horseman. It becomes the most noticeable in Lovin that cali lifestyle!!, as her clothes are now baggy and there appears to be loose skin around her stomach. She returns to her normal body shape by the end of What Time Is It Right Now.

Personality

Hollyhock is a good-hearted, caring, and intelligent girl who finished her high school education early and took a gap year. Aside from that, she isn't that different from a normal teenage girl. She's seeking, curious, innocent, smart, sweet, sarcastic, awkward, and kind of dorky.

Producer Lisa Hanawalt describes Hollyhock as being "as anxious and isolated as BoJack," but "cute" and "has a chip on her shoulders." [1]

As such, she has acquired a few traits from BoJack; she’s a bit lazy as she does not help clean the house at all when Todd lies that she’s a maid and falls asleep twice, and she enjoys eating and has a big appetite—as she claims she ate a whole box of donuts, and then later is seen finishing a whole personal pizza, and then eating a bag of chips. She also hates honeydew.

Despite having a non-conventional family composed of eight polyamorous fathers, Hollyhcok had a supportive, loving upbringing and she loves her dads, however part of her has always wanted to know who her biological parents are, especially her mother. This makes her feel somewhat guilty because she believes she’s being ungrateful for her fathers.

She also reveals in Stupid Piece of Sh*t that she has a “tiny voice” in the back of her head that gives her negative, intrusive thoughts, such as telling her she’s worthless and stupid and ugly and everyone hates her—which is very similar to the anxiety induced inner monologues BoJack has throughout the episode. She believes it’s just "a dumb teenage girl thing."

She is shown to have other insecurities like this throughout Season 4. In The Judge she has insecurities about her weight, saying the skinny, voluptuous L.A. girls on the show BoJack is guest-starring on makes her feel like a blob. Later, BoJack inadvertently agrees with this when he’s trying to convince her Miles, the intern on set is a bad guy, offending and upsetting her.

At the end of the episode, BoJack ended up being right about Miles, but he ends up being terrible in a different way than what BoJack expected, and he stops contacting Hollyhock. She asks BoJack if a guy like Miles could really like someone like her and that if she’s pretty, and if he ever gets the feeling that, "To know you more is to love you less?"

Unlike BoJack, however, she is willing to confront her emotions, as mentioned above she talks to him about her insecurities and anxieties. She willingly starts crying in Commence Fracking when she thinks finding her mom is impossible, which is due to her dads telling her it’s okay to do so and not feel bad about feeling bad. She also confides in Tawnie, her best friend, about being afraid to try drinking due to not wanting to lose control.

Despite her apparent laziness seen in her debut episode, she is very determined to find her mother, even going around asking dozens of women who BoJack slept with in Hollywoo all by herself.

She and Tawnie, apparently get into "fights" a lot, which according to Tawnie are apparently usually about the same things, but they always make up because they do care about each other.

Although it was revealed that BoJack was not her biological father, but was, in fact, her half-brother, and despite not having the greatest experience living under BoJack, Season 4 concludes with her saying that she never had a brother before, indicating she still wants him in her life as a sibling relationship, even when her fathers at that point do not approve of him. By Season 5 they call each other every Sunday, and in Ancient History, she flies from Connecticut to Los Angeles to spend the day with him.

She appears to be quite compassionate towards BoJack, as she asks him where he disappears to all day long and shows concern for him. She is initially forgiving, to an extent, towards his questionable actions.

In turn, BoJack seems to be very protective of Hollyhock and constantly wants to look out for her, even being considerably clingy to their relationship—but also is scared to become close to her, as he believes he may poison her like everyone else in his life, or that his “poison” is already in her, and as revealed in The Kidney Stays in the Picture, when talking to Doctor Champ he admits he has a resentment of horses due to his abusive parents and the fact Hollyhock reminds him of himself.

In Ancient History, he can’t bring himself to hug her when it appears she is approaching him for one, and when he drops her off at the airport she tells him she loves him, but all he can do is smile, which does sadden her to an extent. He does return the hug she gives him when visiting her in Connecticut in The Face of Depression.

However, due to being secretly drugged by Beatrice, BoJack’s mom, with weight loss supplements throughout the course of Season 4, which leads to her overdose. Hollyhock then develops PTSD, having an anxiety attack upon returning to BoJack’s home for the first time since the incident and dumping his opioids down the sink after finding them and thinking he drugged her.

She experiences another anxiety attack when she goes to a party in A Quick One, While He's Away, where she wants to try drinking for the first time, due to her fear of losing control from alcohol, everyone around her getting drunk and passing out, and the trauma of being drugged. A young man named Peter helps calm her down using grounding techniques. Later she tells him she’s trying to "be okay-er overtime" herself when he initially uses the phrase to describe the taste of alcohol.

After learning from Peter about BoJack staying with the former's then high school-aged female friend and her family, going to prom with them, and causing Peter’s girlfriend to get alcohol poisoning and ditched them at the ER, which led to Peter having anxiety issues for a few years, Hollyhock begins to distance herself from BoJack when he becomes a drama professor at her college and acts hostile when he tries to hang out with her.

Hollyhock attempts to set boundaries between her being a student and him being a professor. She even quits rugby after he keeps showing up to cheer for her when the real reason she joined was to get her mind off of him. She also restrains herself from implying she loves him after she somewhat confirms to him that they’re in a fight. Hollyhock tells him he’s forcing himself into her life, and being biological siblings doesn’t mean anything when they don’t actually know each other. She tells him they need to take things slow, albeit reluctantly.

After his second interview with Biscuits Braxby, she cuts him out of her life altogether by sending him a letter three months later and changing her phone number.

Both revelations about her brother lead Hollyhock to realize while she does care for BoJack, and has willingly put up with his less than good qualities and behavior in the relatively short time they knew each other, she doesn't actually know him, and the fact he has hurt, done shady things to, and abused his power over the women in his life, including being responsible for Sarah Lynn’s overdose and death, when she herself is traumatized by being drugged and overdosing while she was under his watch, she needed to cut ties from him so his toxicity wouldn't affect her anymore than it already has.

Background

History

Hollyhock was conceived in December of 1999. Butterscotch Horseman, BoJack's father, had cheated on his wife, Beatrice, with their maid, Henrietta Platchkey. Beatrice is initially angry, but she talks to Henrietta, who is struggling to earn money to pay tuition for nursing school.

Beatrice says she'll pay for her tuition and convinces her to give the baby up for adoption, saying she doesn't want her to end up like her, giving up her life and dreams for the baby and letting Butterscotch poison her life.

Hollyhock is born on September 24, 2000. Henrietta pleads from Beatrice to let her hold her baby and sobs as she’s taken away from her, due to Beatrice not wanting her too get attached.

Hollyhock was originally named "Girl Horse" by Beatrice, but later she was adopted by eight gay men, Dashawn Manheim, Steve Mannheim, Jose Guerrero, Cupe Robinson III, Otto Zilberschlag, , Gregory Hsung, Arturo "Ice Man" Fonzerelliand Quackers McQuack, and renamed Hollyhock Manheim-Mannheim-Guerrero-Robinson-Zilberschlag-Hsung-Fonzerelli-McQuack.

BoJack never knew about Hollyhock’s birth, and Butterscotch died on Halloween, 2009.

She graduated high school a year early in 2016, and she takes a gap year during the events of Season 4.

Season 3

S3E12 Mystery Girl Horse

Hollyhock in her bedroom.

Hollyhock first appears in That Went Well, which takes place in 2016. Princess Carolyn had just opened her own management agency. As she sits in her new office, Judah informs her that someone is trying to contact BoJack Horseman and that she sounds like a teenage girl.

Princess Carolyn, who had been fired by BoJack a few episodes ago and has moved on from him, tells Judah to tell her she doesn't work for BoJack anymore.

Judah hangs up the call. It is shown who was on the other line; a female teenage horse, who bears a strong resemblance to BoJack and appears sad at not being able to reach him.

Season 4

Hollyhock makes her official debut in Hooray! Todd Episode!, which takes place in summer 2017. When Todd leaves the house to VIM to retrieve Mr. Peanutbutter’s sunglasses, she is seen in the bushes, wearing a trench coat and fedora.

After returning to Mr. Peanutbutter’s house, she knocks Todd out with chloroform. After he wakes up, he tries to fend her off with the pool net, but she assures him she won’t hurt him. She introduces herself, and after having to explain her comically long last name to a confused Todd, she explains ever since she was a baby people have said she looks like BoJack Horseman, and she came to L.A. to see if he’s her biological father.

S4E03 Hollyhock and Todd

Hollyhock seeking Todd's help in contacting BoJack

She bought a spy kit for it, and she now enjoys knocking people out with chloroform. She thought Todd could help her because BoJack’s book mentioned they live together.

Todd informs her he doesn’t live there anymore, and BoJack has been gone for a year and no one knows where he is. Hollyhock says she doesn’t have to meet him, she just needs a DNA sample, like a piece of hair. Todd says BoJack‘s house might have something, and Hollyhock chloroforms him again.

When Todd wakes up the two are in BoJack’s house, where it is discovered BoJack has returned, and he is fast asleep on the couch in his underwear. BoJack is in a deep enough sleep for Hollyhock to yank out a strand of his hair, although he wakes up after she says "Ok, let’s blow.", thinking someone had drugs.

When BoJack asks who she is, Todd lies and says she’s his new maid. When BoJack starts to question it, Hollyhock knocks him out with chloroform and tells Todd to take the hair to get it tested.

However, when Todd gets to the lab he finds out he needs a sample from Hollyhock too, and, after going to a restaurant with Courtney Portnoy he goes back to discover she has not cleaned up at all, instead she has been going through BoJack’s stuff to learn about him. She also, "ate a box of doughnuts, got sleepy, and took a nap" which makes Todd certain the two are related.

She doesn’t want to yank out a strand of hair because it sounds painful and asks if they can just use Todd’s hair. The doctor tells him no and Todd runs back and gets a hair sample from a comb she has. BoJack complains to Todd his new maid isn’t doing her job and he’ll fire her, and Todd convinces BoJack to get drunk and fall asleep, and while he does that he’ll get the maid to clean.

However, Todd ends up cleaning the house while Hollyhock lounges around. When Todd has to leave again, he tells her to stay there and he’ll get the DNA test later, but he sees that she has fallen asleep.

Todd ends up giving the hair to Diane, who is trying to write a juicy story for GirlCroosh, the website she works on, lying to her saying Channing Tatum has an illegitimate daughter with a Cordovian refuge and the hair samples are from Channing and the baby. He tells Diane to call him first if the hairs are a match.

Todd goes to BoJack’s house and discovers BoJack sent Hollyhock to Channing Tatum’s house to clean in order to thank him for collecting his mail while he was gone. Todd finds Hollyhock on Channing’s couch, reading a magazine with a feather duster in her hand. She asks him about the DNA, and Todd lies and says it’s not a match, making Hollyhock feeling bad for coming to L.A.

Diane then comes to the front door outside, and as Todd pretends to be Channing as Diane tries to interview him, Diane confirms the DNA is a match. While Todd talks to Diane, Hollyhock leaves through the glass doors in the room.

Later that night, before having another conversation with BoJack, Todd tells BoJack Hollyhock is his daughter. Almost immediately after Todd leaves, Hollyhock returns to BoJack’s house again, and she and BoJack are alone together.

The next episode begins with them sitting apart from each other on the couch, awkwardly. BoJack tells Hollyhock he’s bad news and would be a horrible father. Hollyhock tells him she doesn’t want another dad, she wants to know who her real mother is, and asks who he had sex with in December of 1999. BoJack says he banged a lot of chicks at that period of time.

However, he suspects a woman named Marcy, the president of his fan club, because she was a “poking holes in the condoms type," although she was “a nutter” and “a good lay.” BoJack agrees to take her to Marcy's apartment the next morning to meet her, and Hollyhock says after that she’ll leave him alone. However, she is able to guilt him into letting her stay at his house for the night instead of her hostel, which is in a bad part of town.

The next morning, BoJack wakes up to find that Hollyhock has set the microwave on fire for trying to make him breakfast, a Pop-Tart, to thank him for letting her stay there. She left it in the tinfoil to make it "popcorn style." BoJack forgives her however because "making food is impossible." He also eats the charred Pop-tart on the way to driving Hollyhock to Marcy’s place.

When they arrive at Marcy's apartment, Marcy is excited to see BoJack, saying she knew he would come back. She does admit to giving a baby up for adoption seventeen years ago, to Hollyhock's excitement. Marcy says she tied to call BoJack but the number he gave her was for a sandwich shop in Temecula. BoJack lies and says he would have called her, but 9/11 happened.

Later, Marcy shows them a scrapbook of all the women BoJack had been with and their home addresses due to the fact she was so in love with BoJack and he never called back, which made her jealous. Hollyhock excuses herself to use the bathroom and then calls BoJack into the bathroom telling Marcie it’s a dad bathroom thing.

Hollyhock tells BoJack that Marcy is not her mother, because she found a photo of her from the premiere of the movie Autumn in New York, which premiered August of 2000. Hollyhock was born the following month, in September, and in the photo, Marcie did not look a woman who would be eight months pregnant.

She tells BoJack they have to get the scrapbook, as it has every woman BoJack slept with and that will help them find her mom. BoJack agrees to distract Marcy, but as Hollyhock sneaks into the living room to get the book, to her horror and disgust BoJack and Marcy are having sex behind the couch. While they have sex, BoJack is quizzing Marcy on random Horsin' Around trivia.

The next woman they go to is Tilda Madison, a hairless cat who is the Timedium on CBS. She did, in fact, get pregnant, however she ended up getting an abortion, with BoJack sending her a check to pay for half of it. BoJack is relieved, saying the world doesn’t need any more of him running around. When Hollyhock is offended, BoJack says he likes her, but he would have prevented this situation if he could have. Hollyhock storms out angrily at this comment.

While driving away from Tilda’s set, BoJack tried to apologize, although Hollyhock is still angry with BoJack, and sarcastically pities him for having to talk to women he was shitty to. BoJack in return says he doesn’t know why she wants to find her mother so badly. Hollyhock commands BoJack to pull over, and tells him she can find her mother on her own now that she has the book. She leaves and tells BoJack to have a bad life. As she storms off, he retorts back, “Joke’s on you! I already have one!

However, BoJack returns home and misses her, so he goes to every woman he slept with and asks them if he got them pregnant and gave a newborn horse girl up for adoption seventeen years ago. Neither he nor Hollyhock find her.

Later in the day BoJack finds Hollyhock and tells her what he did. Hollyhock says this was stupid and that she shouldn’t have come here because she did great with eight dads and without a mom. She also gets upset over wanting a mom in the first place because her dads were good enough for her.

BoJack tells her "if she does have Horseman gunk in her" to give up for looking for enough because it’ll never be enough. Hollyhock starts crying, and BoJack makes a failed attempt to comfort her (patting her shoulder and saying "there, there"), making Hollyhock laugh through her tears at how bad he is at trying to comfort her.

BoJack then asks what her dads do to comfort her, and she says they tell her it’s OK to cry and she shouldn’t feel bad about feeling bad.

When Hollyhock considers going back home to her dads, BoJack tells her she can stay with him a little longer and lies that her mother is "Carla Mercedes Benz Brown," a name that he hastily made up on the spot when he saw a brown Mercedes Benz parked nearby.

In Thoughts and Prayers, Hollyhock and BoJack drive back to his house, with Hollyhock amazed that she knows the name of her birth mom. However, two days later at breakfast BoJack admits that he lied about her mother and that he doesn't know who it is.

He promises that he’ll do everything he can to help her find her birth mom, but from his experience with his own mother he says moms aren’t that great. Hollyhock asks if she could meet her, and BoJack lies that she’s dead. Minutes later, however, he confesses she isn’t dead. BoJack tells Hollyhock his mom is living in a luxury nursing home, although he doesn’t remember the name of it. Hollyhock convinces BoJack to take her to meet his mom, and BoJack tells her he won’t lie to her anymore.

BoJack finds out from Princess Carolyn that the nursing home his mother is living at is called Walnut Springs, and it is in Santa Barbara. When they arrive, Hollyhock questions BoJack how he didn’t feel any guilt about leaving his mother here. BoJack says she didn’t know his mom. His mother, Beatrice, was verbally abusive and neglectful to him throughout his childhood and is a big factor in how he became so screwed up.

S4E5 Beatrice “Henrietta could I trouble you for some orange juice?”

Hollyhock and BoJack visit Beatrice in her nursing home.

The two find a now elderly Beatrice, but she doesn’t recognize BoJack and calls him “Henrietta." BoJack is annoyed by this and thinks she is just pretending to not recognize him due to her bitter attitude she always had towards him.

However, she somehow recognizes Hollyhock, saying “Oh hello! It’s You!” BoJack is distraught that his mother cannot recognize him. Hollyhock sits down next across from Beatrice and asks BoJack to get the two of them some orange juice.

Later, when BoJack comes back with the orange juice, he sees Hollyhock talking with Beatrice. Beatrice tells Hollyhock she can’t believe she came back, and that she looks “just like him."

A male doctor tells BoJack that his mother has dementia, and she will not live for another ten years. However, their visit has made her the most responsive she’s been in weeks, and them visiting on a daily basis will help her. BoJack refuses and wants to leave, but Hollyhock demands they visit her every week. She points out Beatrice is his mother, and dementia is hereditary—so they might inherit it one day and they would want someone to take care of them. BoJack begrudgingly agrees.

The next week, Beatrice shows Hollyhock a photo album, with BoJack still bitter that she can’t remember him, and he leaves out of boredom. Hollyhock points out a picture of a young Beatrice from her debutante ball and exclaims she was so beautiful. Beatrice tells Hollyhock she could be thin too, just ease up on the sweets and gallop instead of walk. Hollyhock responds by saying, “Ice cold, Grammy Gram."

A week later, BoJack brings a DVD set of Horsin' Around, which Hollyhock at first mistakes as a “thin hard book," and he puts on the episode “I’m Ready For My Close-up, Mr. Dementia” to learn how to deal with Beatrice. To his shock, Beatrice recognizes BoJack on the TV and laughs at the episode, despite in the past criticizing and dismissing it. During their next visit BoJack goes outside upset over his situation with his mother.

Hollyhock wonders how they can get her to connect the BoJack from the show to the BoJack that visits her every week. BoJack then gets the idea to put on a live episode of Horsin’ Around at the nursing home, and when his mother finally recognizes him, he’ll sit next to her, squeeze her hand, and say “Fuck you, Mom." Hollyhock disagrees with this, but BoJack has already set his mind on it.

One week later, BoJack has set up a fake episode of Horsin’ Around, with Hollyhock playing Olivia by wearing a mop for a blonde wig. She is still skeptical and nervous about BoJack’s plan, but he tells her it’ll be ok, as long as she enunciates her lines. After Beatrice arrives they begin, but Beatrice is confused and scared by what they’re doing, and she ends up having a meltdown where she shoves other elders, and she is wheeled out of the room.

Beatrice is kicked out for being violent, and the doctor from before says due to her rapid deterioration, she should live with them. Hollyhock agrees and says Beatrice can have the guest bedroom and she’ll sleep on the couch. BoJack reluctantly agrees.

While Beatrice is being moved in, with the help of her new nurse Tina Bear, BoJack goes out on his deck, and Hollyhock follows. He says his mother is going to die and she’ll never know how much he hates her. Hollyhock says she probably did because she read his novel, and assures him Beatrice will have bad days and good days, and maybe one day she will recognize him. The episode ends with BoJack putting his hand on Hollyhock’s shoulder, with some hesitation.

In Stupid Piece of Sh*t, after BoJack wakes up in the morning, he starts his self-deprecating inner monologue, Hollyhock says they need milk. She asks BoJack if she can take the car. BoJack’s inner monologue tells him that he doesn’t want her getting her grubby hands all over his stuff, but he quickly takes this back and tells himself she’s his daughter.

But then he tells himself if Hollyhock leaves, he’ll be stuck with his mother. However, if he goes to get it he fears his mother will try to poison Hollyhock against him. He still says he’ll get the milk. He ends up spending the whole day at a bar and returns home drunk and ashamed. Hollyhock is annoyed by this too.

At breakfast the next day she reveals Tina got the milk and is making them breakfast. Beatrice tells BoJack (Henrietta) he should make a healthy breakfast for the baby, because “no one likes a fatty patty,” which makes Hollyhock look uncomfortable.

Hollyhock has Tina get Beatrice a baby horse doll because she kept asking where the baby was, and it was getting depressing to look at her. BoJack is offended that his mother loves the baby doll so much due to how she abused him as a child.

Later, while also making eggs, Beatrice makes Hollyhock coffee, to which she replies is amazing, and is proud of Beatrice of being able to make eggs and "how good of a mother she is." BoJack gets angry at her for saying that. Hollyhock tells him to let go of his grudge against his mom because she’s a "sweet confused old lady" now.

BoJack refuses to believe this. After Beatrice scolds them for yelling in front of her "baby" and tells BoJack ("Henrietta") he’s unfit to be a parent, he sarcastically asks where that insight was fifty years ago. He then takes the doll from her and starts tossing it around. He then sarcastically asks if neglecting the baby and/or telling it for eighteen years how it embarrasses him and his life would have been better if it wasn’t born would make him a great mother, releasing his resentment towards his mother’s lifelong abuse towards him.

Beatrice tries to get the doll back and called him a worthless waste of her husband’s jizzim. BoJack takes this as a sign that Beatrice does recognize him after all. BoJack then throws the doll over his deck, which leads Beatrice to scream and start sobbing, due to her previous childhood trauma of her father burning her baby doll after she caught scarlet fever. BoJack is at first pleased with himself, but Hollyhock is ashamed of him, and BoJack immediately feels regret.

Beatrice is sad until BoJack gets Mr. Peanutbutter to find the doll in Felicity Huffman’s yard, while also agreeing to be on her show (FHBA) to apologize for always throwing his crap over his deck. BoJack tells Mr. Peanutbutter that he feels like Hollyhock is getting attached to him, and he’ll just screw everything up and she’ll hate him. Mr. Peanutbutter assures him that everyone deserves to be loved.

After giving the doll back to Beatrice, he sees Hollyhock by the pool, lighting matches and throwing them into the pool. The voice in BoJack’s head tells him his poison is already in her and he’ll destroy her like everyone else in his life. BoJack for once ignores his intrusive thoughts and goes to talk to Hollyhock. She questions where he disappears to all day.

He says he just drive around, sometimes he’ll go to a bar, or just stop by the side of the road and stares into the distance. Hollyhock why and BoJack just shrugs. She asks if he would rather do that then spend time with her, and tells him in a frustrated tone she knows he didn’t ask for a "dorky seventeen-year-old" and apologizes for being annoying. BoJack quickly reassures her that he likes having her here, and his shitty behavior is his own fault and not at all hers.

Hollyhock reveals that sometimes she has a tiny voice in the back of her head that says everyone hates her and they’re not wrong to feel that way. BoJack says he knows what she means. Hollyhock then asks, “That voice, the one that tells you you're worthless and stupid and ugly? It goes away, right? It's just, like, a dumb teenage-girl thing, but then it goes away?” BoJack says yes.

In The Judge, she comes with BoJack to the set of Felicity Huffman’s TV show Felicity Huffman's Booty Academy: Los Angeles which he’s guest-starring on, which he assumes is some sort of crime show, ripoff with a similar formula to NCIS. On the ride there, Hollyhock talks about sending in a form to meet her birth mother, and worries about her mother not wanting to meet her. She also admits she’s really wanted to get out of the house lately because being cooped up has made her really fidgety lately like she has little tiny bugs crawling on the inside of her skin.

On set, An intern named Miles offers her some water, and Hollyhock is flattered, although BoJack retorts that’s his job. It is learned FHBA stands for Felicity Huffman’s Booty Academy, and it involves judging other girls butts (although Felicity claims otherwise, saying it's about judging character and inspiring female leadership).

During a break, Hollyhock asks if they could go home, because being all the skinny L.A. girls make her feel like a blob. BoJack must shoot for another ten hours, which confuses Hollyhock as to why. Sir Mix-a-Lot, who is also a judge as he is famous for not being able to lie, questions why she isn’t in school. After BoJack says he should mind his own business Hollyhock reveals she graduated early and is taking a gap year. Displeased with having to stay in a “butt-infested warehouse” Hollyhock leaves. However, she runs into Miles and they hang out together.

The next day, Hollyhock returns home, and BoJack questions where she’s been as Beatrice announces she’ll make coffee. Hollyhock says she has been with Miles the Intern the entire time. She says he’s sweet and they have a real connection There is also a bit of an implication they slept together, but it is unknown if it was sexual or not. BoJack says she’ll never hear from him again, however, Hollyhock says Miles promised he’d text her.

BoJack refuses to believe this, although Miles texts Hollyhock asking her out to a party to spend the day with him. Before she leaves, BoJack asks if she wants breakfast, but Hollyhock rejects, saying she’s good with her coffee, and she’ll be home for dinner.

At night, Hollyhock returns home. BoJack is sitting in the dark across from her and says “Hello, Hollyhock.” He is annoyed she came home so late, whereas Hollyhock retorts back that she told him she would be and that he’s not her dads.

BoJack says he’s just looking out for her and is still suspicious of Miles. Hollyhock, as she puts more sugar in her coffee, says there’s nothing to worry about because they like each other. BoJack retorts they like each other now, and begins to say something but hesitates. He then says Miles is a teenage boy whose job is to hang around hot women in skimpy outfits, and then says “You think he’s gonna want...” but quickly cuts himself off. Hollyhock questions if he’s implying she’s not attractive enough. BoJack defends himself by saying she’s the one who said she was a blob.

Hollyhock, distraught, asks BoJack if he thinks she’s a blob, and angrily questions why he would call his daughter one. BoJack says she said it too, but she says she felt like a blob. She angrily questions BoJack again if he thinks she’s a blob. BoJack calmly says that he just thinks LA is a superficial town and she should be careful. Hollyhock angrily says Miles likes her just the way she is, and that’s the kind of person she wants to spend her time with.

She begins to storm out, but BoJack tries to stop her, saying “wait, wait, wait!," but Hollyhock heard this the wrong way and says “I get it! It’s my weight!” and slams the door as she leaves.

When BoJack his dilemma to Diane, she says he shouldn’t have called her a blob. BoJack says they’re both blobs, although Diane says he shouldn’t call women blobs in general. BoJack still thinks Miles is up to something. When Diane asks why it’s so hard to believe someone could genuinely like his daughter, BoJack exclaims that she’s like him.

Diane says this whole thing may be more about him, although BoJack claims it’s about him trying to fix things with Hollyhock. Diane suggests an open conversation, but BoJack rejects this, saying it’s “too Diane-y.” He gets the idea to prove that Miles is a jerk so Hollyhock will like him again.

He goes to a contestant named Goldie and tells her she’ll advance to the final round if she seduces the PA. Later she tells him she had sex with him, to BoJack’s confusion because he only wanted her to seduce him so he can catch him admitting he would sleep with her. BoJack learns from Miles that he is an intern, not a PA, so the contestant slept with someone else. When the other judges learn about what BoJack did, he is fired.

As he leaves, Miles catches up to him. He says if he didn’t want him dating Hollyhock he could have told him, and they could’ve worked out some sort of deal. He reveals he has his own screenplay and tells BoJack if he gives it to someone he would never talk to Hollyhock again, showing that BoJack was right about Miles being a jerk.

BoJack tells Diane he was hoping that he would be wrong about Miles, and that he won’t tell Hollyhock, because she’s smart and she’ll figure it out eventually, and that if she believes someone can love her for who she really is, he won’t take that away from her.

At night, BoJack comes home to find Hollyhock sitting on his couch with the TV on. He apologizes for being an asshole and asks her what she’s doing. She says she’s seeing how fast she can change the TV channels, and earlier she found all the loose change in the house and organized them in alphabetical order by year.

She then asks if a guy like Miles could really ever love a girl like her. BoJack tells her he was just jealous that she was spending so much time with him. Hollyhock says he hasn’t texted her at all that day, and she’s been trying to distract herself. BoJack tells her to forget him because she’ll meet many more guys who will fall madly in love with her. Hollyhock thinks she might have scared him off.

She asks BoJack if he ever gets the feeling that "to know you more is to love you less." BoJack goes on to tell her that she is an amazing woman and to never settle for someone who likes the idea of her. When he tells her she’s funny, kind, and clever, Hollyhock also asks if she’s pretty. BoJack becomes flustered and asks what she wants him to say because obviously, he thinks she’s beautiful. Hollyhock is flattered.

BoJack recommends they go get some ice cream, but Hollyhock says no. BoJack then recommends pizza but Hollyhock says she’s not hungry. The episode ends with Hollyhock going back to flipping channels while BoJack looks at her.

Hollyhock does not appear in Ruthie, but BoJack and Diane go to the county courthouse to find her birth certificate, by asking them for all the birth certificates from the day Hollyhock was born, find hers, and see what it says for “mother.” BoJack says he wants to do right by Hollyhock, but Diane doubts how his plan will work. BoJack assumes they’ll let him do it because he’s famous. BoJack also notes Hollyhock couldn’t come with him because that morning she really got into counting her teeth. He assumes it’s a teenager thing.

BoJack is frustrated by the long lines and all the paperwork, so he gives up and goes home.

Lovin that cali lifestyle!! begins from Hollyhock’s point of view, as she, BoJack, Beatrice, and Beatrice’s nurse Tina playing Uno. We see that Hollyhock is having some sort of an episode, as she is dizzy and disoriented, and she is acting a bit anxious and antsy, as she is tapping her feet and scratching her knuckles and neck. She has also lost a lot of weight, as her clothes are noticeably baggy, she is visually much skinnier and there appears to be some loose skin around her formally plump belly.

When BoJack sees her scratching herself, he asks if she’s OK with a look of concern on his face. Hollyhock insists she’s fine and says she just needs a glass of water. However on the way to the kitchen her dizziness comes back, and she ends up losing grip on the glass and it falls and breaks, with a shard cutting her forehead. BoJack hears this and after seeing she cut herself, he jokes she just needs some alcohol to forget about it. Hollyhock announces she’ll be right back and goes upstairs to BoJack’s bathroom.

As she enters the bathroom, her dizziness and disorientation become worse, as she can barely keep her balance or concentration. She tries to get a band-aid from BoJack’s medicine cabinet, but when she grabs the box she ends up knocking over and spilling multiple prescription pills he had in there.

Her phone vibrates and she sees through her blurred vision she got a text from her “Papa Otto,” one of her dads. He asks, “how’re you doing, honey?" Hollyhock quickly covers up her cut with her bangs and sends him the selfie with a text reading “lovin that cali lifestyle!!!” before she passes out and collapses.

BoJack hears her collapse from downstairs, and he calls an ambulance to take her to the hospital. At the hospital, he is trying to remember her last names so that he can prove he’s her legal guardian because he is not allowed to see her or get any information about her condition if he can’t.

After failing to bribe the receptionist, he suddenly remembers all of her last names and tells her.

He also says she’s 5’8", is seventeen years old, and her birthday is in September. He goes on to say other things about her, like how she looks like him, that’s she loves apples but hates applesauce, she’s funny but not in a mean way, and how she’s sweet and “has this smile,” showing how BoJack has grown found and attached to her.

The receptionist still refuses to let him see her and tells him to have a seat, much to his frustration. BoJack waits in the waiting room for hours, and he ends up falling asleep.

When he wakes up, he sees a group of eight men talking to each other, and they mention Hollyhock. He goes to them and learns they’re her father’s, and they each introduce themselves:

  • Jose Guerrero, a Mexican brown bear
  • Steve Mannheim, “the wrong Mannheim to mess with
  • Dashawn Manheim, “probably the right Manheim to mess with” unless it’s in a dance battle
  • Cupe Robinson III, he dislikes BoJack and was against Hollyhock finding him from the start
  • Otto Zilberschlag, a Polish man, who was formerly a huge fan of BoJack, but after this incident, he’s now "just a regular fan"
  • Gregory Hsung, a lizard who knows of BoJack but not from his work, as his “deal” is that he only watches foreign films.
  • Arturo "Ice Man" Fonzerelli, who dresses and speaks in a greaser-like fashion, and people call him the “Ice Man” because he’s so cool
  • Quackers McQuack, a duck who says quack a lot with a slight temper.

BoJack asks them if she’s OK. Steve angrily says she’s lucky to be alive, and it is revealed Hollyhock overdosed on amphetamines. BoJack is shocked by this, saying he had no idea. Dashawn questions how he didn’t, as Hollyhock is now "as thin as a pole." They are all angry at BoJack, saying Hollyhock said he was taking care of her, and they all blame him for her getting hooked on amphetamines—Steve says he’s lucky they don’t call the police.

BoJack tries to calm the dads down, saying he’ll leave for a bit to give Hollyhock time to rest before he talks to her again. The dads angrily reject this and forbid him from ever seeing Hollyhock again.

After they leave BoJack in the waiting room, he gets a look of shock on his face, and he drives back home. He runs upstairs to his bathroom, and to his horror, he finds his opened and spilled medicines from Hollyhock’s episode from earlier. Thinking that she took them, he quickly flushes them all down the toilet as he lays on the floor and has a panic attack.

Later, as BoJack stares out the window, Beatrice asks where the girl is. BoJack says that she’s gone, to which Beatrice replies, “Oh yes, I took her didn’t I?” This is actually true, as she did take Hollyhock away from her mother which perhaps implies she may have known Hollyhock was the same baby—even in her state of dementia. BoJack then tells his mother that he always hated her for being a horrible mother, and she was, but he blew it even worse. He says being a parent is impossible, so he can’t be that mad at her. Beatrice laughs and says “she” shouldn’t be mad at her because it’s the right thing. BoJack wonders if maybe they deserve each other.

Beatrice gasps and asks again where the girl is because she made the girl coffee. BoJack questions what is up with them and coffee. BoJack suddenly realizes something to his horror, and runs into the kitchen, shoving past his mother. He questions Beatrice what she put in the coffee, to which she replies with a bit of a devilish look ”That’s an old family secret!" He goes under the cabinet and inside the bag with the coffee beans he finds a bottle of “Chubb-B-Gone," weight loss supplements, revealing that Beatrice had been drugging Hollyhock with them to make her lose weight.

Beatrice says she was doing it only until she learned to take them herself also because Beatrice herself took them when she was younger to stay skinny due to her being criticized for her weight during her childhood by her father and her school bully.

BoJack is enraged, which frightens Beatrice, and tells her whole “not knowing where she is or who her son is” thing is not cute anymore, once again convinced she is faking her dementia. He says she ruined the one good thing he had and didn’t ruin by himself, but was ruined because he decided to give her another chance. BoJack angrily tells her she’s out of chances.

In a rage, he drives her to another nursing home and demands they put her in their worst possible room. We see the room is dimly lit, there are stains on the walls, and the window looks out to a dumpster. After the nurse leaves, BoJack coldly tells his mother this is what her life has added up to, her by herself in this room. He says, “Best of luck, see you never.” and begins to leave.

Beatrice asks who he is, and BoJack ignores her and says “Ugh, bye Mom." There, Beatrice finally recognizes her son again, calling him by his name. (At the end of the next episode when she is scared and confused by her surroundings, BoJack goes back on his planned “Fuck you” speech, and ends up narrating her a summer from her childhood.)

Time's Arrow shows Beatrice’s backstory through her point of view, although due to her dementia some details are messed up, such as background characters having no faces or scenes or signs changing with a glitching noise. This is where the real Henrietta is introduced with a black scribble over her face. It is this episode, Henrietta is revealed to be Hollyhock’s mother and that Butterscotch Horseman, BoJack’s father, is actually Hollyhock’s father, making her and BoJack half-siblings.

What Time Is It Right Now shows BoJack sadly returning to his now empty house. He goes out onto his balcony and tries to call Hollyhock, but Steve, one of her dads, answers and angrily tells him to not call this number. BoJack tried to explain what really happened, saying it wasn’t Hollyhock’s fault, but Steve hangs up.

BoJack is watching reruns of his show again. Sabrina is upset at the Horse, and says, “You’re supposed to be my dad! You’re supposed to be looking out for me! You’re the worst dad in the world!

BoJack gets up and heads to the kitchen, but he bumps into boxes of Beatrice’s stuff. While he looks through it, he calls the nursing home and tells them his mom’s stuff is still at his house, but to his frustration they put him on hold.

Another episode of Horsin' Around plays and Sabrina is wondering if she can find her real family using DNA. A lawyer tells her that DNA can belong to everyone in a family, like sons and fathers. BoJack turns the TV off.

BoJack is at Bellican’s Bar with Princess Carolyn. She is trying to tell him about Philbert, but he’s not having it, complaining about mysteries. She brings up how Matthew Perry was one of the actors considered for the roll. This makes BoJack flashback to a few months earlier.

Hollyhock is trying to decide which photo she should send with the letter she’s writing to her mom for the adoption agency. She hopes they may have her address on file, and she doesn’t want this whole thing to end up like “Chandler’s List,” an SNL skit with Matthew Perry.

Hollyhock explains that the skit is a parody of Schindler’s List, in which the titular character is replaced by Chandler from Friends. At the end of the skit, Chandler is distraught because he felt like he could have done more. BoJack leaves the bar and rushes home. He digs through his mother’s stuff and finds a pink envelope with the photo and letter Hollyhock wrote to her mom. He looks at the address and sees it was forwarded to his mother twice, and on the original address, it includes someone named “Henrietta Platchkey,” although it says she no longer lives at the address.

BoJack goes to Wichita, Kansas, Hollyhock’s hometown, and goes to Hollyhock’s house. After Dashawn opens the door BoJack barges in, pleading the still angry fathers to let him talk to Hollyhock. They tell him she’s not here and he shouldn’t have come here. BoJack pleads to let them listen to him for Hollyhock. They reluctantly agree.

BoJack begins to explain that the whole time Hollyhock was staying with him, it didn’t make sense, because if he was her father, where was her mother. He then got the idea that maybe he wasn’t her father. Steve tells him he isn’t, they’re her fathers, and the other dads surround BoJack.

BoJack says he knows, but what he meant is that just because they had the same DNA, doesn’t mean that he’s her father. Jose begins to tell him he isn’t her father and begins to talk about what a father really is, but BoJack cuts him off, frustrated they all keep jumping down his throat. BoJack reveals he is not Hollyhock’s father, his father, Butterscotch, is her father.

He went to every hospital and county clerks in Los Angeles, but he couldn't find any record of a baby horse born in 2000 in Los Angeles. This causes him to realize that his father might have knocked up one of the family maids, so he went back to San Francisco and found Hollyhock's birth certificate with Henrietta’s name on it. He then looked her up on Facebook and found her living in Minneapolis, Minnesota with her phone number attached to her account.

BoJack shows the fathers the number saying he wants Hollyhock to have it, even stating he doesn't mind if they don't tell her how they got it, or if they tell Hollyhock he’s a terrible person and he never sees her again. After conversing in their own Dad Language, the fathers reluctantly agree to give it to her, but order BoJack to leave.

After BoJack returns home, Princess Carolyn visits, and he agrees to do Philbert. When she asks about him having a kid living with him, he says she has these adopted dads. He thinks they’re dicks, but they take good care of her, and she’ll have a good life.

We later see him on his deck reading the script. It is then that Hollyhock calls him again. She has gained her weight back, and she tells BoJack she wanted to thank him for finding her mom. She said she figured it out through her dads’ secret language, which they think she doesn’t understand but she thinks it’s super obvious what they’re saying. Hollyhock also reveals she’s been talking to Henrietta, who seems like a really nice woman, and she’s flying out to Minneapolis to meet her.

She also complains that the airport charged her $10 for a fruit cup, and its 90% honeydew. BoJack angrily agrees with her on how terrible honeydew is, with Hollyhock saying it’s the Jared Leto of fruits.

As Hollyhock tells him they’re starting to board, BoJack apologizes for not taking better care of her. Hollyhock says moving in with him was too much too fast, but she still had a good time in L.A., despite her getting drugged for months on end. BoJack says he really wanted to be a good father to her, and Hollyhock says he’s not actually her dad at all, which BoJack thinks is a good thing.

Hollyhock tells him she has to go. BoJack asks her things, like if she’s renting a car or if she wants her seat upgraded or better fruit. Hollyhock tells him she’s ok and reminds him she never needed another dad because she has eight of them. However, she says with a smile she never had a brother. This makes BoJack, for the first time smile, as he is deeply touched by finally making a loving family connection, something he never really had before.

Season 5

Season 5 Hollyhock in college

Hollyhock, now attending Wesleyan University, getting a call from BoJack at 3 a.m.

In Season 5, Hollyhock is attending college at Wesleyan University in Connecticut. She and BoJack call each other every Sunday afternoon.

In Ancient History, she spends a day with BoJack before she has to go back to Connecticut. However, we see she has developed trauma from what happened to her the last time she was at BoJack's house, as she starts to experience anxiety when she first steps into his house. BoJack assures her it won’t happen again.

After the two get pizza, Hollyhock wants to take the car and get ice cream. BoJack refuses but she manages to snag what she thinks are keys from his coat. Instead, she finds BoJack's prescription pain killers that he got from hurting his back. She panics due to her past trauma of being drugged and flushes the pills down the sink. BoJack tells her what they were for, and the two try to get more. Whenever Hollyhock apologizes, BoJack assures her it's ok, but then makes a backhanded jab saying it's technically her fault.

They go to Dr. Hu, but he has stopped dealing illegal drugs due to the death of Sarah Lynn. Then, they try to go to a dealer, but the dealer gets busted by the police. As Hollyhock and BoJack run from the police, they are stopped by a fence. However, to Hollyhock's surprise, BoJack has no problem hoisting both of them over the fence when he had been telling her the whole time his back was hurting. As they drive away, she confronts him about it. BoJack lashes out at her saying that she doesn't understand because she only had one bad experience with his mother, but he has been in pain his entire life.

When they arrive at the airport, Hollyhock accepts that the pills he was taking were okay, because he needs them, but she makes BoJack promise he won’t take them unless he gets hurt again. The two say their goodbyes, and Hollyhock tells BoJack "I love you," although BoJack doesn't say it back, and the two then wave goodbye to each other as she leaves.

Season 6

Hollyhock is briefly mentioned in The Kidney Stays in the Picture, where Doctor Champ leads BoJack to admit he keeps Hollyhock at an arms-length despite being his only living family member because he has a deep resentment of horses due to his parents' abuse and she reminds him of the horse he hates the most—himself.

S6E07 BoJack Hollyhock hug

Hollyhock hugging BoJack in The Face of Depression

BoJack visits Hollyhock in Connecticut in The Face of Depression. She runs up and greets him with a hug, which this time he accepts.

While driving in her car, Hollyhock invites BoJack to go to a concert with her and her best friend, Tawnie, who unbeknownst to BoJack was in the backseat, due to her and Hollyhock apparently being in a fight.

At the concert, Hollyhock and BoJack both agree they think the music is terrible, and Hollyhock admits she only came to cheer up Tawnie. She explains their fight started because they canceled all the drama classes, due to the acting professor quitting as he got cast in a regional commercial, and now Tawnie has to change her major.

BoJack comments that a lot of actors would love to teach in a place like this, and wonders if they’re looking for a replacement. Tawnie comes up to Hollyhock, and after the two talk it out they make up and hug. BoJack, Hollyhock, and Tawnie head out to the dance floor and Hollyhock asks BoJack where he'll go next. BoJack asks where it's not winter, but he dislikes Hollyhock and Tawnie's suggestions.

Later in the episode BoJack is hired as the drama professor at Wesleyan.

In A Quick One, While He’s Away, Hollyhock and Tawnie are staying in New York City with the latter’s boyfriend, Trey. The three have plans to go to a party, but Tawnie insists on them arriving later to look cool. The three explore the city in the meantime.

While at the Empire State Building, Hollyhock admits to Tawnie she is nervous about drinking for the first time—she wants to become it's supposed to be fun, but at the same time, she is afraid of losing control. However, she still wants to go to the party, because she’d rather lose control in front of people she doesn’t know

At the party, while Tawnie and Trey go off on their own, Hollyhock opens a beer, but seeing everyone drinking and passing out makes her overwhelmed and she begins to have an anxiety attack. However, a young man rushes up to her and helps her through it by having her use listing her surroundings as a grounding technique, which works. He also has her say her name, but he admits he only said that to learn her name. The guy introduces himself as Peter and explains he learned that trick from his psychiatrist. He invites her to sit outside with him.

While sitting on the window to the fire escape, Hollyhock takes a sip of beer and spits it out. Peter says it tastes “okay-er over time," and Hollyhock says she’s trying to be "okay-er over time" herself. Peter reveals he didn’t drink at all in college due to an incident in high school, which he begins to describe after Hollyhock asks about it.

There was a girl he knew at his school, who was best friends with his girlfriend, Maddy, and who had a guy stay with her family, and the guy took her, him, and Maddy to prom, where he bought them alcohol and essentially forced them to drink it. Maddy then got alcohol poisoning and the guy ditched them at the ER. Peter assures Hollyhock Maddy was fine, but she had to get her stomach pumped and he dealt with anxiety issues for a while, but he’s better now because he realized it wasn’t his, Maddy’s, or the girl’s fault, it was some shitty guy.

S6E08 Hollyhock "Who Is He?"

"Who is he?"...

He then reveals the guy is actually a movie star. Hollyhock asks “Who is he?" but Pete hesitates. She asks again, "Who is he," and Pete opens his mouth to answer as the episode ends, although by the following episode it is clear he told her it was BoJack.

When BoJack starts teaching at Wesleyan during the spring semester, she shows discomfort whoever he gets her attention and tries to distance herself from him, rejecting him wanting to hang out with her (especially since he would be around alcohol and underage girls), and even quitting rugby, which she joined after winter break to distract herself from BoJack, when he keeps showing up to her games and cheering for her.

He confronts her about the latter, saying it was their thing, but she tells him in a hostile tone her thing is a student and his thing is being a professor. She does hesitantly agree to show up at his end of the year student showcase.

After she fails to show up, having forgotten about it due to being busy with final assignments, in the middle of the show BoJack goes back to her dorm to confront her, where in return she confronts him about forcing himself into her life in college, and that them being siblings means nothing when they don’t actually know each other, saying they both had lives before they met each other. BoJack says he doesn’t want to think about the person he was in the past because that’s not him anymore, and he apologizes and tells her he won’t come back if she’s not comfortable.

Hollyhock admits Tawnie told her he’s a really good professor, and they both agree to take their relationship slow, although after BoJack leaves Hollyhock appears reluctant.

However, in Xerox of a Xerox, BoJack’s disastrous second interview with Biscuits Braxby reveals to the world his past shady and predatory behavior, including being responsible for Sarah Lynn’s addiction and death and in general taking advantage and grooming most of the women in his life.

Three months after the interview is aired, in The Horny Unicorn, BoJack, who is hated by almost the entire world, and was not invited back to teach at Wesleyan, keeps trying to call Hollyhock, but he keeps getting her voicemail. He eventually gets a letter from her and fears the worst. He later leaves another message for her saying he got her letter but he hasn’t read it yet and admits it’s nice to even just hear her voice on her voicemail.

Towards the end of the episode, BoJack tries to call her one more time, but he gets a message saying her number has been disconnected. He finally opens her letter, and while the contents are never shown or read out loud, the fact she changed her phone number means that Hollyhock cut BoJack out of her life and told him so in the letter.

BoJack is devastated, and it’s the final straw that leads him to relapse.

Hollyhock is never seen nor mentioned again for the remainder of the series, not even in The View from Halfway Down where Herb lists off BoJack’s roles and relatives such as his parents and not being a father or husband to anyone, which could imply BoJack is too ashamed of losing Hollyhock to associate her with himself anymore.

Trivia

Hollyhock weight loss

Hollyhock’s gradual weight loss throughout Season 4; Left to Right: Thoughts and Prayers (S4E5, normal body), The Judge (S4E8, belly is noticeably a little smaller, hips, limbs, face, and neck are also a little skinnier), lovin’ that cali lifestyle!! (Noticeably much skinnier in her body and face, her clothes are very loose).

  • She likes apples but she dislikes applesauce, saying it’s too slimy.
  • Like BoJack, she hates honeydew, describing it as "the Jared Leto of fruits" as it’s the worst part of everything it’s in.
  • She graduated from high school early and took a gap year during the events of Season 4.
  • Her dads have a secret "dad language," although she is able to easily understand it, as it just involves adding "ittag" after the first letter or syllable.
  • Her Instagram is @hollyhollyhocksnfree:
    • This is a play on the phrase "Olly Olly Oxen Free."
  • Despite her body type, she was shown to be athletic. She has what appears to be a soccer trophy in her bedroom in That Went Well, it is revealed she was the captain of her JV soccer team, in Commence Fracking, she is able to tuck and roll while sneaking through Marcy’s living room, in What Time Is It Right Now she shows a photo of herself rollerblading, and she was on her college’s rugby team until Intermediate Scene Study w/ BoJack Horseman.
  • Hollyhock being secretly drugged by Beatrice with amphetamines with the coffee she makes her is hinted at multiple times:
    • The opening credits from Stupid Piece of Sh*tto Lovin that cali lifestyle!! show Hollyhock receiving coffee from Beatrice, whereas the first opening credit sequences she appears in Commence Fracking and Thoughts and Prayers) shows her eating a Pop-Tart. When Hollyhock first drinks Beatrice's coffee she remarks it's "amazing," implying that Beatrice puts extra ingredients in it that would give a more distinct taste.
    • She is shown doing odd things such as lighting matches and throwing them into the pool, organizing all the coins she found in the house, seeing how fast she can change the TV channels, and counting her teeth. While this could initially be excused as social awkwardness, or could even be considered as OCD, unusual behaviors are in fact a real-life side effect of amphetamines.
    • In The Judge, she says being cooped up in the house makes her feel like she has little bugs crawling around under her skin. Restlessness is another side effect:
      • She rejects food twice, once at breakfast saying that she is good with her coffee and at the very end of the episode when BoJack asks if she wants to go out for pizza or ice cream. This is due to amphetamines being an appetite suppressant, although initially the last incident couldn't be interpreted as being caused by Hollyhock being self-conscious about her weight throughout the episode, and BoJack inadvertently agreeing with her that she was a “blob."
      • She is seen carrying her coffee thermos around more often, implying that she has become addicted to the drugs inside it
      • Hollyhock has lost weight since her previous appearance.
    • At the beginning of Lovin that cali lifestyle!!, Hollyhock appears very skinny, to the point that her clothes don’t fit her, she is dizzy, is acting anxious, and keeps scratching her neck and arms, all of which are side effects of amphetamines, until she eventually passes out from overdosing.
  • It is implied, that her biological mother Henrietta Platchkey, actually did in fact want to raise her daughter but was forced by Beatrice to give the newborn girl up for adoption.
  • She enjoyed knocking people out with chloroform, mainly Todd Chavez. The spy kit it came from is the same one BoJack owns.
BoJack Hollyhock Hawaii Instagram

BoJack and Hollyhock in Hawaii

  • According to BoJack’s Instagram, after Season 4, Hollyhock went with BoJack to Hawaii and saw the Broadway show, Hamilton. This suggests that, despite Hollyhock's fathers forbidding BoJack from seeing her again, the two half-siblings have hung out with each other afterward. Another possibility is that her fathers have forgiven BoJack and lifted the ban on him interacting with Hollyhock:
    • This has been proven true, as in February 2018 BoJack posted a picture on Instagram [1] of him watching the Super Bowl, at Hollyhock’s House with her and her eight dads.
    • The two also went to a Quack DeMarco concert, dressed as Vincent Adultman for Halloween, Hollyhock sent BoJack a card and chocolates for Valentine’s Day, and BoJack lets Hollyhock use his Netflix account.
    • It must be noted, however, it has not been confirmed if BoJack's social media profiles are canon to the series, especially since many posts do not line up with the series’ timeline, such as the Halloween image, where BoJack did not have a Halloween party in 2019, and in the year previous, which was seen in Mr. Peanutbutter's Boos, Hollyhock and BoJack did not dress up together nor was she even there.
  • In her college dorm, she has posters of artists including "Cockatoo Twins" and "Quack DeMarco" which are puns on real-life artists Cocteau Twins and Mac DeMarco.
  • In The Horny Unicorn, it's revealed she lives in room 67A in Bradley Whitford dorm at Wesleyan. This dorm does not actually exist in real life, however.
  • Her voicemail message states "Hey, it's Hollyhock! Leave a message, if you're a hundred."
  • Series creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg confirmed that no actual contents were ever ”written” for Hollyhock’s letter, it's up to the audience to decide what she said. <ref>https://twitter.com/raphaelbw/status/1401297175447891969?s=21Cite error: The opening <ref> tag is malformed or has a bad name
